I discovered this beautiful 1963 Honda C95 Benley Touring on August 26, 2007 in a potato barn in Blackfoot, Idaho. It was part of a true “barn find collection” of Honda Dreams and a few other Honda models along with a 24 foot trailer load of Honda parts from a now defunct Honda dealer in the 1960’s. The parts are long gone but I started a slow and sympathetic restoration to this bike. The VIN reads C953030312. The engine number reads C95E-3030505. I have looked for this VIN in the Honda Motorcycle Identification guide and do not find it listed. The tank insignia reads Honda 175. The CA95 Benley’s are listed as 150 cc bikes not 175cc but who knows? This in any case is a very rare bike in really good shape.
When I found it, the bike had a half-inch of dirt all over it, but was completely dry and rust free. The miles show only 6942. I was told it had been in storage over 30 years! From its dusty condition it was not hard to believe. The dry southern Idaho desert air had preserved it very well indeed.
I brought the bike back to my shop and disassembled it and cleaned everything up. The bright work still shines nicely. The wheels are nearly new looking and are straight and true. The paint shows some nicks and scratches but is still very presentable for a bike almost half a century old! The exhaust pipes have some dings and scratches but have absolutely no rust thru. All the electrics work well. I replaced the flasher and the turn signals work, as they should. The valves were adjusted, air cleaner cleaned, replaced the spark plugs, and changed the oil. I cleaned the tank with solvent and it is rust and scale free.
The bike runs very well for a nearly 50-year-old machine. It does not smoke and shifts thru all 4 gears up and down very well. The bike brakes exceptionally well for a bike this old. I just took it on a 60 mile run over Teton Pass (9000 feet elevation) to my home in Jackson, Wyoming and back and it pulled up the 10% grades with my 200 pound butt on it at 40 miles per hour in second gear and cruises on the flats nicely at 50 miles per hour. It will go a lot faster at sea level but keep in mind she is a little starved for air at our 6300 foot altitude.
All in all it is a great running and riding bike that would be a great addition to any vintage motorcycle collection or use as a very cool daily rider. I get thumbs up wherever I ride it. Now you can to! Thanks for looking and Happy Bidding!
